Out And About In Alexandria.

Parks: Cameron Run Regional Park offers a variety of recreation facilities in an urban area, including Great Waves Water Park. The park also features a deluxe miniature golf course, a nine-station batting cage, picnic shelters, and a special events pavilion. At Founders Park, you can enjoy a picnic by the river, walk your dog, or play volleyball in the beautiful river-front park. Huntley Meadows Park is known for being a prime birding spot, with over 200 species identified in the park. Jones Point Park offers a safe natural habitat for wildlife amidst the Washington, DC/Arlington urban area.

 

Airports/Transportation: Reagan National Airport is located approximately six miles from Alexandria and is easy to get to. For all your international traveling, Dulles International Airport, is located 22 miles from Alexandria. Van Dorn Metro Station provides an easy commute around town as well.

 

Elementary Schools: Samuel W. Tucker Elementary is the city's first new school in 30 years. The two-story school has 28 home rooms, a science lab, an art room, two music rooms, a media center equipped with a computer lab and television studio, a gymnasium, a cafeteria, and a stage. St. Mary's Elementary School is a parish Catholic school within the Diocese of Arlington that is accredited by the Virginia Catholic Education Association (VCEA). Grades pre-kindergarten through eighth are offered.

 

Middle Schools: Francis C Hammond was reorganized in the fall of 2009 into a campus of three middle schools (FCH1, FCH2 and FCH3) and George Washington Middle School is now a campus of two middle schools. Both schools focus on the development of the academic, social, physical and emotional needs of all their students and strive to set the international standard for educational excellence.

 

High Schools: TC Williams High School is one of the most respected, comprehensive high schools in the country. Its facilities and its top students compare favorably with the best private schools. The school opened in 1965 and has served the Alexandria community and tens of thousands of students since then. Episcopal High School is a college preparatory boarding high school serving 400 co-ed students in grades 9 through 12 in Alexandria.

 

Colleges/Universities: George Washington University is a private, coeducational comprehensive university located in Washington, DC. The university was chartered by an Act of Congress on February 9, 1821 and is the largest university and private land holder in the DC. It is famous for its programs in international affairs, political science, public policy, law, and medicine. Northern Virginia Community College, often abbreviated NVCC and colloquially as NOVA, offers a quality and convenient educational experience with multiple campuses and centers in Northern Virginia.

 

Restaurants: There are several wonderful dining locations to enjoy in Alexandria. For spectacular waterfront dining and views and delicious seafood and steaks, the Chart House is the place to go. Gadsby's Tavern is a fine dining establishment in Old Town Alexandria that has been serving lunch and dinner since 1770. La Tasca Spanish Tapas Bar, King Street Blues, Majestic Cafe, and are a few of our other favorites.

 

Sports Venues: Catch a ball game at Nationals Stadium, home of the Washington Nationals or Verizon Center, home to the NBA's Washington Wizards, the NHL's Washington Capitals, the WNBA's Washington Mystics and the NCAA's Georgetown Hoyas men's basketball team.

 

Shopping: If you’re looking for great shopping, stores, and restaurants in Alexandria, the Potomac Yard Center has it all. The Springfield Mall is the largest mall in Northern Virginia and Landmark Mall is nearby too.

 

Museums: The world-renowned Torpedo Factory Art Center, was once a torpedo factory and is located just outside of DC in Alexandria. The mission of the Alexandria Black History Museum is to enrich the lives of Alexandria's residents and visitors, to foster tolerance and understanding among all cultures and to stimulate appreciation of the diversity of the African American experience. A few other area favorites include the Carlyle House Historic Park and the George Washington Masonic National Memorial.

 

Entertainment: Enjoy a movie at Regal Cinemas Potomac Yard Stadium 16, the Regal Kingstowne 16, or the quaint and lovely Old Town Theatre, built in 1914 and playing modern movies today.
