Which D.C.-area employers get the best (and worst) reviews from their employees on

We asked Glassdoor, a website where current and former employees can anonymously rate their workplace by a bunch of different metrics, to crunch the numbers for us, and the results were at least a little surprising.

Glassdoor looked at locally-based companies that have gotten at least 25 reviews from local employees during the past two years. The results: public sector workers seem to like their employers a whole lot more than others.

Despite budget cuts, widespread furloughs and salary freezes, eight of the 10 highest-rated employers were public-sector entities.

The top-rated employer, getting an average of 4.5 stars out of five, was Alexandria-based The Motley Fool LLC. The lowest-rated company was District-based CoStar Group Inc. (NASDAQ: CSGP), with 2.1 out of five stars.

We offered the lowest-rated companies the opportunity to respond, several of which did. Those responses are included in the slideshow. Glassdoor also gave us examples of positive and negative employee comments for each of the top five employers. Those are in the slideshow too.

On Glassdoor, employees rank companies on five categories: career opportunities, compensation and benefits, work/life balance, senior management, and culture and values. We didn't get a breakdown of how each company ranked in each of those categories, just an overall ranking.
