Bozzuto Makes Waves at Urban Land Institute Awards Program

October 08, 2013

Tom Bozzuto and The Bozzuto Group Receive Top Honors at ULI WaveMaker Event

BALTIMORE, MD – October 7, 2013 – The Baltimore District Council of The Urban Land Institute (ULI), held their fifth annual WaveMaker Awards program last Thursday evening, recognizing outstanding real estate development projects and visionaries in urban development.  The Bozzuto Group’s Founder and CEO Tom Bozzuto received the lifetime achievement award while the company’s Union Wharf community in Fells Point was recognized as one of the outstanding projects of the year.

The lifetime achievement award is given to a recognized leader in the development community that has served more than two decades; touched all aspects of development (acquisition, design, financing, implementation); touched a variety of different land uses (retail, office residential, hospitality, etc.); someone that the vast majority of people would say “that makes sense – they are the right person”; and has volunteered their time and/or resources to help advance the industry.

During Tom Bozzuto’s more than forty-year career, he has overseen and been responsible for the creation of nearly 50,000 residential units with a conservatively estimated value of nearly $7 billion.  His work and honors within the housing industry are inspiring.  A Congressional Appointee to the Millennial Housing Commission, he has served several terms as a Gubernatorial Appointee to the Maryland Housing Commission and is the current Chairman of the Board of the National Multi Housing Council.

During his acceptance speech, Tom recognized his founding partners John Slidell, Rick Mostyn and the late Bernie Lubcher; his son Toby; the operating partners; and employees of The Bozzuto Group for their years of support and service.  “This year marks our company’s twenty-fifth anniversary and throughout it all, I would especially like to recognize my wife Barbara for her continuous love and support.  I wouldn’t be here without her,” Tom concluded.

In addition, The Bozzuto Group’s Union Wharf community was honored and recognized with a ULI WaveMaker Award.   Members of ULI are asked to nominate projects based upon the following: completeness; sense of place and quality; sustainability; visionary and emulation; and need. The Bozzuto Group President Toby Bozzuto accepted the award on behalf of Union Wharf and recognized its Project Developer and Bozzuto Development Company Vice President Jeff Kayce for his work on the community.

“Union Wharf is a wonderful example of what can happen when inspiring design meets great implementation,” said Toby.  “We worked closely with the surrounding community to create a project that compliments the area while making it a better place to live.  I am very proud of our team’s hard work and the ultimate result of their efforts.”
