NBC Washington: Groundbreaking for Monroe Street Market, New Mixed-Use development Near Catholic University
November 09, 2011
Mayor Vincent Gray helped break ground Wednesday for a brand new mixed-use development that officials say will transform the Brookland neighborhood.
Monroe Street Market will be combination of residential, retail and community space along five city blocks near the Brookland-CUA Metro station and on the South Campus of The Catholic University of America.
The multi-phase project will ultimately house more than 700 apartments, 45 townhomes, more than 80,000 square feet of street-level retail, 15,000 square feet of studio space for artists, a 3,000 square foot community center and 850 parking spaces.
Developers said the project will also make the community and South Campus more pedestrian-friendly and improve the traffic pattern on Michigan Avenue.
