January 2015

I’m sure you’ve heard the saying, “There’s no job too big, no job too small” a thousand times before. Well, you’re about to hear it again.

While Bozzuto Construction is known for taking on and completing large-scale, multi-phase construction projects, we actually have a group – our Special Projects Group – that spends 100% of their time specializing in multifamily new construction and renovation projects that might be considered smaller scale.

We formed this group in response to demand amongst our current and prospective clients for a dedicated team who could bring specialized expertise to, and understand, the unique needs to of smaller projects, especially those that are complicated or non-traditional.

Do you have a project in the works that could benefit from our Special Projects Group? We’d love to hear from you.

Best regards,

Mike Schlegel | President, Bozzuto Construction

Bozzuto Named 2015 Military Friendly® Employer

Bozzuto has once again been honored with the Military Friendly® Employer designation. The designation, based upon the weightings and methodology established by Victory Media, is based on strength of military recruiting efforts, percentage of new hires with prior military service, and company policies toward National Guard and Reserve Service.

The Bozzuto Group was founded in 1988 by three partners, of which two are veterans – Chairman and CEO Tom Bozzuto and former Vice Chairman John Slidell.

“As a veteran, I am particularly proud of this designation. The bravery, loyalty and dedication of our military are something to honor every day, and all of us at Bozzuto are forever grateful for the soldiers who dedicate themselves to ensuring our freedoms," said Tom Bozzuto, chairman and CEO, The Bozzuto Group. "It is a privilege for us to support the members of the military and their families by offering our employees a strong career path, and helping them find the most important place of all, a place to call home.”

Hekemian & Co.

Hekemian & Co., Inc. is a third generation family-owned real estate management and development company, founded by Robert Hekemian in the early 1920’s in Hackensack, NJ.

Today, almost 60 years later, Robert continues to lead the steady and vigorous expansion of the company with the expertise of his own sons, Robert, Jr., Bryan and David, who joined the firm in the 1980’s.

Since then, Hekemian & Co. has expanded its portfolio of assets and services into the mid-Atlantic region of Northern Virginia and Maryland. The firm’s broadened capabilities have enabled them to expand their investment and development criteria to include mixed-use lifestyle and large-scale urban projects.

Hekemian & Co. selected Bozzuto Construction to serve as general contractor of the redevelopment of The Rotunda, currently one of Baltimore’s largest construction projects. The project includes 379 new apartments, 152,000 square feet of revitalized and new retail space, 140,000 square feet of office space, a new central plaza providing outdoor gathering spaces, an interactive fountain, retail Kiosks, and areas for outdoor events and festivals. Union Wharf, a Bozzuto Construction community located in Baltimore’s iconic Fells Point neighborhood, has been named the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) 2014 Community of the Year as well as Multi-Housing News’ 2014 Best New Mid-Rise Development.

Union Wharf rests on a former industrial site once home to a cement factory tucked into a busy seaport with a rich history of shipbuilding. Details within the building take inspiration from the neighborhood. For instance, the “Bozzuto Shelf,” which appears at the doorway of many Bozzuto residences was reinterpreted for Union Wharf. This version contains an industrial light fixture, bent steel arm that forms the shelf itself, and a laser cut graphic showcasing the apartment number. Fabricated by Baltimore’s own Gutierrez Studios, the shelf takes cues from the neighborhood’s railroad and shipping roots.

Polished concrete floors in the lobby and common spaces, along with reclaimed wood used in wall and floor finishes, carry the post-industrial loft theme throughout the building. Juxtaposed with comfortable, eclectic interior design, these elements give Union Wharf the feel of a re-used warehouse furnished with items collected over time rather than a brand new structure.
