D.C. Residents Compete for Energy Savings, Carbon Footprint Reduction and Environmental Benefits

(Washington, D.C. – December 4, 2017) – Today, Bozzuto Management Company announced the final phase of their “War of the Watts” campaign. Since October 2017, fourteen Bozzuto-managed communities across the East Coast have been competing for the highest reduction in energy usage. During the final push of “War of the Watts” in December, the DC Sustainable Energy Utility (DCSEU) and Arcadia Power will support three Bozzuto-managed communities in DC by hosting events three nights in a row to encourage simple actions – such as exchanging light bulbs – and provide home energy savings tips from the DCSEU’s energy efficiency experts.

The three participating buildings – Flats 130, Senate Square Apartments, and 77H – are home to more than 2,500 residents. “The War of the Watts initiative provides an exciting opportunity for resident and partner engagement. We are privileged to work with partners such as the DCSEU and Arcadia Power to advance our sustainability and environmental stewardship goals and to enable our residents the ability to easily reduce their energy consumption. It may be a small step at the individual apartment level, but the aggregate impact of this campaign will be sizeable,” stated Bozzuto Management Company Sustainability Associate, Chris Yeazel.

Bozzuto considers sustainability a touchstone of its business philosophy. In 2017, for its efforts to measure and reduce energy and water consumption, Bozzuto won the prestigious ENERGY STAR® Partner of the Year Award, the first and only 100 percent multifamily company to do so. Bozzuto also continues to focus on its goal of increasing recycling at all its communities by a minimum of 5 percent year-over-year.

Arcadia Power, a nationwide energy service, provided ENERGY STAR-qualified LED lightbulbs to distribute to residents during the events so they can turn in their old bulbs and upgrade to create easy savings. Arcadia Power gives everyone the power to choose clean energy, at the best price. The Arcadia Power platform links with a member’s existing utility account to give them easy access to clean energy, customized savings plans, home efficiency products and more – all through their monthly utility bill.

“We admire Bozzuto’s commitment to sustainability and are excited to support Bozzuto and help their residents power their apartments efficiently,” said Ryan Nesbitt, President of Arcadia Power. “Switching to LED bulbs is an easy way to save money while creating a sustainable future. We hope that more members of the community continue to come together to help renters and homeowners access clean energy programs and home efficiency solutions.”

In an earlier campaign involving the Fenestra at Rockville Town Square and the Pepper Building, the buildings achieved $38,900 in energy savings, a four percent reduction in energy use, and $6,500 of water savings, a 14 percent reduction in water use. Currently, Bozzuto manages 67,000 units in more than 200 communities along the East Coast between Miami and Boston and in the Northeast and Chicago. Given that buildings are responsible for 40 percent of national COemissions, actions to reduce footprints and save energy are extremely important.

“We congratulate Bozzuto for leading by example and hope that many other real estate companies in the District of Columbia will follow suit. Only a collective effort to reduce energy consumption, and thereby cost and emissions, will lead to the environmental results we hope for and we are pleased to support it,” said Ted Trabue, Managing Director of the DCSEU.

The DCSEU, a local nonprofit, has collaborated with Bozzuto in the past. Their joint projects reducing electricity and natural gas consumption have resulted in more than $450,000 in lifetime energy cost savings and prevented the emission of almost 3,000 metric tons of CO2 – that’s the equivalent of taking more than 630 passenger vehicles off the road for one year.
